Social Media is a huge buzzword these days. But what the heck is it? And how can you use it?

A Social Media Primer

Wikipedia, which defines social media as:

Social media are media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media supports the human need for social interaction, using Internet- and web-based technologies ... transforming people from content consumers into content producers. Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content (UGC) or consumer-generated media (CGM).

In other words, the internet made human and social.  Social media so far, has taken many forms, as you can see in the picture below. It also serves multiple purposes: sharing information, real time communication, blogging, gaming, etc. Wikipedia is one of the most popular examples. Wikipedia is an online "encyclopedia" in which users organically create definitions, articles, links, references, etc.

How EcSELL Institute is Using Social Media

Social Media fits nicely into the mission of the EcSELL Institute. We're working to create a global community of sales management professionals who learn, share, and grow their expertise on the 6 Pillars of Sales Management. As such, EcSELL Institute uses several forms of social media. For example, our vision for the EcSELL Institute Peer Network is to allow members to interact by asking questions, sharing best practices, and connect virtually.

Behind the Times? 

Some proponents of social media profess this phenomenon is the next internet revolution. Social media has even become synonomous with Web 2.0.  

Earliest adopters, as usual, are yonger cohorts. But interestingly, our "wiser" generations' curiosity has been piqued. I ran the numbers for the average sales manager in this fun tool from Forrester Research's -- and found that they are mostly on the sidelines, as spectators to SM...



Hopefully, EcSELL Institute members are a special group, better described as "Joiners".  These are the sales managers who see the benefit of team collaboration -- whether it's virtual or in-person. In fact, EcSELL Instiutte members have their own virtual community where they can share ideas, post answers to others questions, and network.  We call it the EcSELL Institute Peer Network.
