Broadcasting HappinessDo you broadcast happiness? Do you share good news, support, encourage, congratulate or thank the people in your life? Could you possibly be underestimating the power of positivity?

Each of us could make improvements in this area, and Michelle Gielan’s recent keynote about "happiness" during EcSell Institute’s Sales Coaching Summit (rebranded as The Coaching Effect Summit now) in Charlotte, NC, was just what many of the attendees, including myself, were craving. As a former CBS news anchor and author of Broadcasting Happiness, Michelle's objective was to educate and emphasize the science of happiness by working to create success in sales through positive engagement.

Here’s what we should know, we are all broadcasters. We constantly transmit messages to the people around us. These messages have tangible effects. In fact, just three minutes of negative messaging can affect the quality of your day by 27%. (Tweet this)

This focus on putting out good news, is not only beneficial amongst friends and family, but has a profound impact in the workplace. The effects of broadcasting happiness within your organization could result in:

  • 31% more productivity
  • 25% better performance
  • 23% less stress
  • 37% increase in sales

Pretty impressive, right? Positive communication is proven to fuel performance amongst teams. Small words have a big impact, and small acts of kindness can bring forward all sorts of possibility in our lives.

So what’s the best way to spread success? Use these three research-based strategies for activating other people’s brains toward the positive for maximum performance:

Start conversations with a positive fact in order to set the right social script and  right mindset for success.

Look for evidence why a challenge is temporary, and how our behavior can make a difference.

Each and every day, make a conscious effort to praise or thank someone in a brief email, text message, phone call or conversation. This effort not only increases happiness of those around you, but also boomerangs back as happiness to you.

How do we put these strategies into practice in our organizations?

  • Implement small changes each day to increase your positive communication with your team.
  • Recognize moments and team members by communicating “job well done” whenever possible.

What happens when you do this company wide?

  • The organization begins to celebrate successes that the entire team might not have heard about without employing positive communication.
  • You have an opportunity to support the team with successes and solutions. Celebrating these ‘wins’ along the way helps the team feel progress toward their goal.

Ultimately, we never know how far the ripple effect can reach when we make the change to start broadcasting the positive each and every day. Start implementing these happiness strategies and you're on your way to maximizing performance and creating the ultimate coaching effect.
