The Upside of Everything

It's a fact that people want to be around others who have a positive attitude.  A good friend recently shared their philosophy that there are two kinds of team members in the workplace, those who point out problems and those who solve problems. I challenge you to be a problem solver. Being a problem solver requires a good deal of diplomacy and a positive attitude.  Employees with positive outlooks tend to be more productive due to the fact that they always see opportunity within every challenge presented--they do not waste time worrying, they put their energies into more productive activities.  There are many benefits to having a positive work attitude, and many ways to help yourself cultivate a positive work attitude. Here are just a few:

Benefits of Having a Positive Work Attitude Include:
  • Better coping skills as you are in the right frame of mind to cope with stressful situations
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others
  • Ability to turn a challenge into an opportunity
  • A positive attitude is contagious, soon affecting everyone in the workplace
  • A positive person is much more apt to be perceived as a leader in the workplace
  • When you expect positive results, you usually get them, which results in more success at work
  • Ability to stick to a project, see it through to completion which heightens job satisfaction
  • Resilence-you have the ability to more easily bounce back from setbacks

How to Cultivate a Positive Attitude:

Which brings us to the more important question of how do I cultivate or reset my current mindset to a positive work attitude?  It's as simple as taking responsiblity for your own life, you are the only one that can truly change your attitude.  Prepare for each day's responsibilities and plan out progress at a reasonable pace.  Also, it's important to develop a habit of using only positive language in meetings, working 1-to-1 with a co-worker and in any situation that you are placed throughout your day.

Try to surround yourself with positive people and smile and laugh as much as possible.  Laughter has been scientifcally proven time and time again to relax the whole body, boost your immune system and release endorphins.  Perform your work with enthusiasm and always thank others and give positive feedback with a job well done. Look for the good in every situation.  It's there, sometimes you just have to spend a little more time defining it.  Likewise, by looking for the good in a situation allows you to pinpoint the good and problem-solve who to inject more good than bad by your focus on that area.  Lastly, take good care of your physical, mental and spiritual self.  You cannot be good to others if you're not good to yourself first and foremost.
